Very Useful June 20, 2010 Graydon B. Young (Shingle Springs, CA United States) I had previously purchased the "Magic Lantern Guide" for the Canon Rebel XSi/450D and while it was technically correct and it did expand upon the Canon Instruction Manual but after describing what a particular setting or feature meant, I still was not sure of what setting I needed to make for my use of the camera. I purchased the "Dummy Guide" and that filled that need perfectly as recommendations were made for my use of the camera. I then purchased this "Companion" book which then filled in some of the few remaining "blank spots" that were left from the "Dummy" book's review of the camera.
Now I have it all..............
Great Alternative to a Course! May 7, 2010 IH (PGH) I bought this book when I bought my new Canon XSi, because I knew I wouldn't have time for an actual course on DSLR photography. It turns out that this book is even better, as it is tailored to my specific camera. It teaches a lot of general photography concepts, as well as specific technical techniques, so you can learn a lot of what you need to know about photography as you go along.
Of course, practice makes perfect. Practice and looking at other, expert photographers' work.
The book is set up so you can move chapter-by-chapter, or skip around as your needs change. I think it's a really great purchase for a beginner like myself.

I started out by visiting Ben Long's website. While I was browsing around there, I noticed the "contact" link and it occurred to me that I had a photography question and who better to ask? He replied personally to me within a day. Ok so now I'm impressed.
This definitely influenced me to buy this book. I have not gotten all the way through it yet, but love it already. He explains things in a way that starts off with the basics, without making one feel lost or without intelligence. One does not need experience with dSLRs to understand this book, yet he also goes into challenging lessons when you're ready to move past the basics. He encourages you to try all his suggestions as you go along, and gives clear examples with the photos in the book. He has a warm personal way of writing that I find very appealing.
I'd also like to comment on the good quality of the book. It's on nice heavy paper with beautiful colors. They certainly did not cheap out on publishing.
I will update further when I've gotten all the way through the book (I'm going to take my time with it because it's so enjoyable), but there's no doubt in my mind that anything can take away from the 5 stars I've given it. This book is adding much to my pleasure I already have with the camera itself. I'm sure I will read this more than once and keep it as a reference. This should be Canon's manual for the XSi, or at the very least bundled with it.
A very helpful book April 19, 2010 Jake of goslowphotos (Austin, Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been a semi-pro photographer for several years now, and unfortunately, am not very digitally savvy when it comes to what cameras and computers can do these days. This book opened my eyes to the camera I've been using for the last year - there are features I didn't know it had. There's a good bit of basic photo (taking photos) info, which is solid but easily found elsewhere. The more technical dialogue about the XSi was very helpful to me, illustrating both the pluses and minuses of the camera, clearly and efficiently. Worth the money.
Must have for a Newbie!! April 19, 2010 J. Miller 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ok, I have read all of the reviews saying "It's just a fancy manual". That may be the case for someone with previous DSLR experience. I, however, have never owned or operated a DSLR before my XSI. I read the manual and, frankly, much of it read Greek to me. I'm not an idiot but the practical application to much of it was lost on me. This guide changed that. Ben Long does an excellent job of writing in easy to read plain english. If you have previous experience in photography or DSLR experience this may be too simplified. However, if you have little experience (like myself) and want a good foundation to begin truly utilizing your camera's potential. I recommend you buy this. You already made a big investment in your camera now make a small investment and get the most out of it. Unless you take a photography, class this book is the best way to get out there and start shooting.
