 Great book...but not on kindle July 28, 2010

This review is based on the kindle app for the ipad.
The content of the book is great but buy the print version. The ipad version is the same price (which doesn't seem right since there are no printing, warehousing, delivery etc... costs) but regardless of this the formatting is HORRIBLE on the kindle version.
There are borders around blocks of text, the title for a picture is on a different page - it just doesn't look that great.
Stick with the paper copy and Amazon need to fix the kindle version of this book

If you like Scott Kelby, then Joe McNally is his hero. Each page is filled with tricks and tips for making the "shot". Easy to understand, funny to read, and it's one of those books that has your mind turning on a light-bulb and that "ding!" sound every time you turn the page!
I am in love with this book, and I think anyone who gives it a try will love it too.

This is the 1st photography book I have read from cover to cover in one sitting. Joe McNally is a pro and some of the tips are beyond the equipment constraints of most of us, but to hear again and again about the importance of lighting is still valuable for any serious photographer. And many of the tips are independent of equipment - like, seeing differently, finding unusual points of view, how to establish connection with a portrait subject, using natural light to best effect, using wide angle lens close up, employing what's at hand like a bedsheet to improve light... and on and on. So much photography advice around today is about how to improve a photograph digitally. This is all about getting amazing shots in camera. I am inspired!

I am a big fan of Joe McNally. His "Hot Shoe Diaries" was a great read and this book has the same flavor of Joe's personality. When you read books about photography your first inclination is to try and understand how to technically produce the same photographic results, mostly in a technical manner. This is not a good approach and will not give you what you desire. I have read so many comments here about how the book will not give you all of the steps towards producing these images. Why should it? If you read a book about The Beatles, do you want to write Twist and Shout? It's been done. Simple as it sounds you can like someone else's work but they already did it. Get over it. The whole point is to become inspired to go out and create your own work. If you are a painter do you think that you will be congratulated for doing a nice job with a paint by number kit? The point of reading books by artists is to feel the inspiration behind the work and gain some insight into the process of thinking which leads to producing great work and in some cases, sellable work.
As a professional photographer myself, my job is to always look for things that inspire me. But the only way to create good shots is to find your own way and do your own experimenting. Playing the cello along with a YoYo Ma recording will not make you a great cellist. You have to do your own practicing. You have to learn your scales, chords, intonation, styles, and all of the elements of making music. When you come across a situation that offers a challenge, you need your own skills in order to manage the situation. You can't carry a handful of books in your camera bag.
But, you can read this one and become inspired to go out and start "seeing" and "doing". Joe's books make it that much more enticing. When he tells his stories you can feel the excitement of the process. That's the idea in my opinion.
Fun to read and great hints for photographers March 25, 2010

I am a naturally curious person (technically), so this book is fun for me to read. It reveals how all pictures in the book were taken. Sometimes, it is not so obvious...It also helps understand why some types of pictures just look better than others.
Even though this book applies primarily to pro's with elaborate equipment (e.g., soft boxes, numerous light sources/strobes, grids, assistants, etc) there are many applicable hints for all photographers but perhaps starting from advanced amatures (such as myself).
It really makes you appreciate the art & science of photography and this highly skill author - he is artistic as well as technically competent.
I certainly recommend this book
