Product Description

Detailed coverage of Canon's four speedlite-580EX II, 430 EX II, 220 EX and the new 270 EX-built exclusively for Canon DSLRs

If you use a digital SLR camera, then you understand just how critical it is to have a capable flash. Canon Speedlite shines a whole new light on taking photos with a Canon DSLR. You'll explore the possibilities of wireless lighting with multiple speedlites as well as the creative effects you can achieve. Author and professional photographer Brian McLernon demystifies setting up the speedlite, synchronizing the speedlite equipment, and determining lighting ratios.

  • Canon DSLRs are only growing in popularity and the Speedlite system is a must-have accessory for exploring a new world of digital photo possibilities
  • Shows you how to create an inexpensive and portable wireless studio lighting system that can go where you go
  • Demystifies setting up the speedlite, synchronizing the equipment, and figuring out lighting ratios
  • Covers other Canon lighting system components, such as the ST-E2 Speedlite Transmitter, Macro Ring Lite, and Macro Twin Lite

Real-world information on using these speedlites illustrated by full-color examples and untangles the complexities of using the Canon Speedlite system.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide!   July 21, 2010
Anne Adams
Learning flash was not the easiest thing for me to wrap my mind around. And, I had the hardest time finding a guide other than the speedlite manual's the walked me through the steps and functions of the speedlite. I even had purchased a DVD, taken several classes to learn the basics, but I found this book to be a wonderful hands on guide for any photographer at any level wanting to learn more about the Canon speedlites system. I was very impressed and plan to continue to use this book as a resource.

5 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Canon Flash   July 13, 2010
David Beardsley (Portland, OR)
Trying to learn to use Canon flashes on your own with the manual can be a frustrating experience, especially if you're using multiple units off camera.

The book is worth the price just for the clear instructions on how to operate your flash units. It additionally provides an overview of lighting and tips for various shooting situations which should benefit new to intermediate photographers.

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for not just the speedlite, but general lighting   June 28, 2010
Kathy (Sherwood, OR)
I appreciated the great breadth of this book. It includes the history of the Speedlite system, the advantage of ETTL II technology, detailed discussions of each part of the speedlite itself (covering both the 580ex II and the 430 exII), practical advise on available accessories, recommended components of a suggested "portable studio", flash photography basics, posing basics, and everyday applications of the speedlites as well as specifics as to various types of photography. The book was an enjoyable read, understandable but also detailed and technical. I read it easily in just over a day but am looking forward to rereading it to absorb more of the details that are worth a repeat. The author included many of his own photographs and included details of the ISO, shutter speed, lens and the lighting used for the situation. I was fairly comfortable with the speedlite and using lites off camera prior to reading the book, but am getting ready to take pictures at my first professional wedding setting. This book was definitely a worth while read for this stage in my career.

I read thru cover to cover and even though I am using my first 430EX II I did not hit upon a single bit of info that led to an 'ah ha' moment.
went back thru and learned nothing.
the book leads thru a desritption of what can be done, but now how and no info I didnt already get from canon's documentation.
might be just me, but take a lcose look at the content before buying

5 out of 5 stars Very useful, and not only for Speedlite owners/users   April 21, 2010

The book is very well written, and it includes a lot of information that is useful even if you're not using Speedlites. There is a lot of information about lighting in general, including using sunlight for your pictures, or using light modifiers to reflect or change light from any source you might have. There is also some advice about posing for pictures and framing, about the kind of gear you need for various kinds of photography (action, scenery etc.), as well as some info about white balance. The book includes a white balance card and a color-test card. You can obviously use essentially all the suggestions in the book with any comparable quality flashes, not only Canon Speedlites (like Nikons, for example, though of course you get most features only if you use a Canon flash on a Canon camera, and a Nikon one on a Nikon). The main drawback is that you find out how many expensive things you might still want to buy in order to obtain great lighting for your pictures (like a couple more flashes, or flash gels, or remote flash triggers, to name a few).
